Publishers 'scared' of new IP - Schafer: Mon, 06 Feb 2012 10:00:11 -0800

Double Fine Productions founder explains what drove his studio from frontline retail games like Brutal Legend to downloadable fare like Double Fine Happy Action Theater.

Originality is generally considered a positive trait for a game to have, but it's one that makes publishers nervous, according to Double Fine Productions founder Tim Schafer.

Speaking with Digital Spy, Schafer explained the reasoning behind his studio's move away from making big-budget retail games based on original intellectual properties.

"Publishers often don't want to release anything new, I mean they're scared of new IP, and Double Fine specializes in new IP," Schafer said. "That's always been our challenge, is getting a publisher to invest millions of dollars in something brand new like Brutal Legend."

After the release of 2009's Brutal Legend, the developer switched gears to producing smaller-scale downloadable games with greater frequency. Since the change in approach, Double Fine has released Costume Quest, Stacking, Iron Brigade, the Kinect retail game Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster, and last week's downloadable Kinect minigame compilation Double Fine Happy Action Theater.

Shippin' Out Feb. 5-11: Darkness II, Kingdoms of Amalur: Mon, 06 Feb 2012 07:40:31 -0800

Take-Two and 38 Studios head to market alongside Capcom's 3DS Resident Evil: Revelations and online shooter Gotham City Impostors.

For being the second week of February, the game industry has a surprising number of desirable releases on tap. These range from a sequel to 2007's acclaimed The Darkness, to the maiden effort from Curt Schilling's 38 Studios, to a 3DS Resident Evil and a downloadable Batman game from the creators of F.E.A.R.

First, to The Darkness. Digital Extremes takes over from Starbreeze Studios, and The Darkness II picks up several years after the events of the original. Players once again take the role of Jackie Estacado, now the don of the Franchetti clan. While he has controlled the chaotic powers inside him since the events of the first game, a reasonless attempt on his life kick-starts a full-on mob war in New York, a perfect situation for the Darkness to reemerge.

Co-published by EA and 38 Studios, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning began life under the auspices of THQ at Big Huge Studios. The fantasy-themed role-playing game will feature a number of genre staples, from skeleton warriors and cave trolls to swords and sorcery. Players will be able to dictate the progression of their protagonists, choosing and developing a variety of skills that will determine an optimum play style as well as character classes.

Already deemed a critical success, Resident Evil: Revelations follows Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine in an episodic story-driven adventure set between the events of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. The agents are once again on a mission to discover the truth behind a zombie outbreak, with this one stemming from the T-Abyss virus.

Building on the success of Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham City, Monolith Productions' Gotham City Impostors is a farcical team-based first-person shooter. The multiplayer-only downloadable title lets players create heroes and antiheroes based on DC Comics' roster and then duke it out with custom-built and/or off-kilter weaponry.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 tops UK games chart: Mon, 06 Feb 2012 07:10:06 -0800

After six weeks at the top, FIFA 12 gets knocked down to four, and Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the first new release to go to number one in 2012.

It has been all change in the UK games chart this week, with three new releases going straight into the top five. Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII-2 leapt straight to the top of the all-formats chart, ending FIFA 12's six-week reign at number one. The game already has dated DLC, with the Lightning and Master Sergeant Amodar coliseum battle due to be released this week, with more episodic content coming soon. For those who don't know their Moogles from their Chocobos, be sure to check out GameSpot's guide to the long-running series.

Also new to the top five is Konami's Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, which entered the chart at number two this week. Featuring remastered versions of PlayStation 2 titles Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, the HD collection also includes Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker from the PSP.

SoulCalibur V is also new to the chart this week, entering at number five. Despite positive review scores and an appearance from assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, it failed to meet SoulCalibur IV's number one debut back in August 2008, which knocked Wii Fit off the top spot.

And although FIFA 12 has fallen from the top spot, it appears that football fever hasn't completely died out, with Football Manager 2012 holding the top spot of the PC chart for the 12th week in a row.

UK All-Formats Chart for Week Ending 4 February 2012:
1. Final Fantasy XIII-2 - Square Enix Europe
2. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection - Konami
3. Battlefield 3 - Electronic Arts
4. FIFA 12 - Electronic Arts
5. SoulCalibur V - Namco Bandai Games
6. Assassin's Creed: Revelations - Ubisoft
7. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - Activision Blizzard
8. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Bethesda Softworks
9. Just Dance 3 - Ubisoft
10.Saints Row: The Third - THQ

BioWare apologizes for Mass Effect novel errors: Mon, 06 Feb 2012 07:00:15 -0800

Company amending future Mass Effect: Deception copies after community points out slew of inaccuracies in latest sci-fi book.

Gamers who picked up a new copy of the latest Mass Effect novel, Mass Effect: Deception, now possess somewhat of a collector's item.

Writing on the official BioWare forums, community manager Chris Priestly apologized for the string of errors fans found in Mass Effect: Deception and said changes are being made for future editions of the novel.

"The teams at Del Rey and BioWare would like to extend our sincerest apologies to the Mass Effect fans for any errors and oversights made in the recent novel Mass Effect: Deception," wrote Priestly. "We are currently working on a number of changes that will appear in future editions of the novel."

Last week, Mass Effect fans published an extensive Google Docs catalog of errors found in Mass Effect: Deception, a novel set in the Mass Effect universe. These mistakes included timeline missteps like Nick and Gillian aging six years since the events of Ascension, which is set only three years before Deception.

Mass Effect: Deception was released on January 31. It was penned by William C. Dietz and published by Del Rey. Dietz is the author of several game novels, including those set in the Halo, Resistance, and Hitman franchises. Dietz also served as a writer on Resistance: Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita.

Skyrim Creation Kit lands Tuesday: Fri, 03 Feb 2012 14:50:18 -0800

Bethesda Softworks puts a release date on eagerly anticipated mod tools for PC version of its open-ended role-playing game The Elder Scrolls V.

Gamers eager to leave their own mark on Skyrim will be able to do so starting early next week.

Bethesda vice president of PR and marketing Pete Hines today announced via his Twitter account that PC Creation Kit mod tools for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be released Tuesday. He also teased that the publisher would have a "special surprise" to go with it, though he gave no indication what it could be.

Designed to support the modding community, the Creation Kit gives gamers access to Bethesda's own development tools to make new Skyrim content. Likewise, Valve's Steam Workshop tool for Skyrim will aid PC gamers in finding and installing community-created game mods.

While the PC Creation Kit will no doubt spur the mod community for Skyrim, the game's do-it-yourself fan base isn't waiting for Bethesda's help in tinkering with the game. Check out the video below for a look at some of the game's earliest fan-made modifications and where to get them.

Respawn's first game due by March 2013 - Report: Fri, 03 Feb 2012 12:21:02 -0800

Marketing calendar indicates EA Partners' fiscal 2013 filled with Respawn's first game, Overstrike, Outnernauts, and a new Populous title.

EA Partners will release Respawn Entertainment's first game, as well as two other previously unannounced titles, by March 2013, according to a purportedly leaked internal marketing calendar.

French gaming site Hardgamers reported it discovered an EA Partners marketing calendar for the April 2012-March 2013 period that included mention of Respawn, The Secret World, Overstrike, Outernauts, and Populous. The release calendar indicated all titles were to be released by March 2013.

As for the titles on the sheet, The Secret World's inclusion falls in line with the game's already announced April release date. That title is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game presently in development at Funcom and set for release on the PC.

The rest of the games on the list, on the other hand, previously either did not have a release window attached to them or were not known to exist at all.

Most notable is the debut title from Respawn Entertainment, the studio formed by a flurry of former Call of Duty developers. Outside of a blurry screenshot, details are nearly nonexistent concerning Respawn's first game. However, it is rumored to be a science-fiction first-person shooter that might support 3D.

Also included on the marketing calendar, according to the website, was Overstrike, Insomniac Games' squad-based stylized multiplatform shooter, which was announced at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo without a release window.

Additionally, the website is reporting that the calendar included mention of a game called Outernauts, a title that EA has not formally announced and one that has ties to Insomniac. On January 28, the Santa Monica, California-based game developer filed a trademark with the United States Patent & Trademark Office covering use of the term "Outernauts" in video games.

As for the mention of Populous on the release calendar, the real-time strategy series has laid dormant since 2007's Populous DS. No additional information concerning the title was made available.

As of press time, EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the matter.

Sega Sammy's game business weighing down earnings: Fri, 03 Feb 2012 10:45:49 -0800

Publisher treading water as booming slot machine business offsets poor home gaming numbers due to weakness in the West.

It's not that Sega Sammy is doing especially poorly, per se. It's more that the Japanese company continues to struggle in the Western market.

Today, Sega Sammy issued its April-December 2011 earnings, reporting revenues of ¥312 billion ($4.07 billion), down .5 percent from the same period in 2010. Profit also gave up some of its massive gains from the year-ago period, falling 6 percent to ¥34.384 billion ($449 million).

Sega Sammy's slot-machine business in Japan continues to be the company's moneymaker, as the segment posts an operating profit of ¥67.495 billion ($881 million) on revenues of ¥177.716 billion ($2.32 billion). The consumer business, of which console, handheld, mobile, and social games are party, is Sega Sammy's second-largest segment and did not fare so well.

Net sales for its home-gaming segment fell 4.9 percent year-over-year to ¥64.101 billion ($837 million). The segment also reversed last year's modest operating profit, posting a ¥5.51 billion ($71.9 million) operating loss during the period.

Though Sega Sammy proffered no console unit-sales figures, the company said top releases during the period were Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Sonic Generations. The company also said that it found significant success with its mobile title Kingdom Quest, which sold 2 million units.

Square Enix profits nearly triple due to Deus Ex, FFXIII-2: Fri, 03 Feb 2012 09:24:32 -0800

Action, RPG games help publisher post 175 percent year-over-year rise to $65.78 million for last nine months of 2011; net sales down slightly to $1.2 billion.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution and the Japanese debut of Final Fantasy XIII-2 were big hits for Square Enix in 2011 and helped the publisher post a strong profit during its latest period.

For the nine-month period ended December 31, 2011, the publisher posted net income of ¥5.01billion ($65.78 million), up 175 percent from last year's haul of ¥1.82 billion ($23.8 million).

Square Enix attributed the sharp increase in net income to sales of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Final Fantasy XIII-2, which were released in Japan during the period. Revenues from Square Enix's Web, smartphone, and social networking services were also called out as contributors to the bottom line.

Total net sales during the period came in at ¥95.74 billion ($1.26 billion), down 2.5 percent from the ¥98.18 ($1.28 billion) recorded a year prior. A significant chunk of that total stemmed from the company's Digital Entertainment business unit, which posted ¥53.7 billion ($704 million) for the period, a rise of 6.2 percent from the year prior.

Square Enix said its full-year forecasts of ¥65.61 billion ($861 million) in net income on ¥130 billion ($1.7 billion) in net sales remain unchanged for the year ending March 31, 2012.

BioWare teases Mass Effect future: Fri, 03 Feb 2012 07:58:09 -0800

Developer says it has "so much to draw from" for potential future games set in universe, but no decision has been made yet; Mass Effect 3 due next month.

On March 6, Mass Effect 3 will ship for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, marking the end of Commander Shepard's trilogy in the space-bound role-playing series. However, the franchise may live on.

Speaking to OXM, Mass Effect 3 executive producer Michael Gamble teased the future of the Mass Effect series, saying BioWare has "so much to draw from" if it decides to make a new game based in that universe.

"Without going down any specific path, you can think of many, many different areas throughout the [intellectual property], throughout the history, where there are large wars to be won, large battles to be had, and a lot of development to be done around where these races came from, how they came about," he said.

Gamble said no decisions have been made but reiterated that "the future is wide open" for what the studio could work on from the franchise moving forward.

As for Mass Effect 3, that game is due out on March 6 and has players once again taking on the role of Shepard, who is now on the run from the shadowy pro-human organization Cerberus. To save Earth, Shepard must travel the galaxy trying to rally support from alien civilizations with varying degrees of sympathy.

Game of Thrones delayed to May 15: Fri, 03 Feb 2012 07:30:15 -0800

Action role-playing game based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy series pushed from early 2012 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC .

Gamers eager to get their hands on Game of Thrones for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC are going to have to wait longer than expected. Publisher Atlus has announced that the role-playing game adaptation of George R.R. Martin's fantasy franchise has been delayed to May 15.

Game of Thrones features numerous familiar locations from the books, as well as likenesses of some of the actors from the popular HBO television series. When the game was announced last November, it was expected to arrive in "early 2012."

On the gameplay front, the title will feature an "active slowdown tactical combat engine" that slows time and lets players make strategic battle decisions. Character interactions and player decisions are also said to have a big impact on the game's world.

The title is currently in development at Cyanide Studios, the same developer that created the tepidly received A Game of Thrones: Genesis strategy game for the PC.

Developer says something "brand new" coming to shooter in 2012; Meet the Pyro short also on the way for later this year.

Valve's Team Fortress 2 is over four years old, but the shooter isn't done expanding just yet. Valve has announced that it is working on a "secret project" related to the game that will be released in 2012.

Writing on the game's official blog, the developer said the project was "brand new" and was not a hat or a map for the game. However, outside of those bits, the company did not shed any further light on the development.

On top of teasing a new project for Team Fortress 2, Valve announced that the final "Meet the Team" short would arrive later this year. The concluding installment will be "Meet the Pyro," and according to Valve, it will be replete with bloody scenes.

Team Fortress 2 was released in 2007 and adopted a free-to-play business model in June 2011. Following the switch, the game saw its player base rise five times over. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's review of Team Fortress 2.

Shooters, MMOGs linked to problem game playing - Study: Thu, 02 Feb 2012 20:37:42 -0800

A new study conducted by the Institute for Special Populations Research in New York reveals that some game genres are more prone to problem game-playing habits.

Video game addiction has become a widely debated public health issue both in the US and overseas in the past five years, despite the lack of a formal diagnosis. While the American Psychiatric Association (APA) recently rejected a proposal to include video game addiction in the next Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V)--to be published in May 2013--researchers around the world continue to investigate methods of determining, treating, and preventing what has now become a recognized mental-health issue.

A recent study conducted by the National Development and Research Institutes' Special Populations Research branch in New York has discovered a link between problem game playing and particular types of game genres.

Luther Elliott, Andrew Golub, Eloise Dunlap, and Geoffrey Ream (the latter from the School of Social Work at Adelphi University in New York) surveyed 3,380 adult participants over the age of 18 who said they played video games for an hour or more during the last week.

The survey paid particular attention to characteristics of video game use, including time played, titles played in the past year, and problems associated with playing. The research team then used Gamefaqs.com to sort the 2,652 valid titles into 15 mutually exclusive genres: massively multiplayer online role-playing games, other role-playing games, action adventure, first-person shooter, other shooter, sports general, sports other, rhythm, driving, platformer, real-time strategy, other strategy, puzzle, board and card games, gambling, and other.

The results of the survey showed that only 5 percent of respondents reported moderate to extreme problem game playing; of that 5 percent, the most problems showed up among those who reported playing either first-person shooters, action adventure, role-playing games, and gambling games during the past year.

The most common titles reported by participants in the problem categories were: Call of Duty (first-person shooter category); Grand Theft Auto (action adventure category); World of Warcraft (MMORPG category); and poker (gambling games category).

This led the team to conclude that there is evidence to suggest that problem game playing is linked to particular kinds of game genres, but that future research into this area is needed, particularly research that pays attention to the game-design elements specific to the problem genres.

"Recent sales figures for blockbuster series such as Call of Duty and Halo indicate a huge audience for the FPS genre in America; our findings suggest that a considerable sub-population is experiencing at least moderate degrees of problem video game playing," the study says.

"Perhaps the immersion potential of a first-person perspective, commonly combined with online competition, largely accounts for the higher rates of problem game playing. For action adventure games, a trend toward nonlinear 'open-world' style environments in which extensive, time-consuming exploration is encouraged may create a context for more pervasive experiences of problem game playing."

"These interpretations are speculative at this point, but suggest important avenues of exploration for future research."

Red Dead Redemption sells 13M, NBA 2K12 hits 4M: Thu, 02 Feb 2012 14:24:01 -0800

Publisher's net revenue dips 40 percent to $236.3 million during third quarter; open-world Western and hardwood sim reach new sales milestones.

Take-Two didn't have a happy holiday. Today, the publisher announced that net revenue for the three months ended December 31 came in at $236.3 million, down 40 percent from last year's holiday haul of $334.3 million.

Take-Two attributed the downturn to a lack of big-name games like Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare and Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete, which were selling well this time last year. Additionally, Take-Two said the NBA lockout negatively affected sales during the period.

Net income for the period stood at $29 million, down sharply from the $49.5 million posted during the same period a year prior.

According to Take-Two, the biggest contributors to the company's net revenue during the period were NBA 2K12 and L.A. Noire, as well as catalog sales of Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Midnight Club Los Angeles, and Borderlands.

Specifically, Take-Two said Red Dead Redemption life-to-date sales have climbed to 13 million units, NBA 2K12 sales have reached 4 million units, and L.A. Noire unit sales are closing in on 5 million units.

Take-Two said digitally delivered content made up 11 percent of total net revenue for the period, led by Grand Theft Auto III for iOS and Android devices. Sales of add-on content from the Grand Theft Auto, L.A. Noire, and Red Dead Redemption franchises also were big digital contributors for Take-Two's bottom line.

On a nine-month basis, Take-Two's revenues were also down. For the nine-month period ended December 31, the company reported net revenue of $677.7 million, down from $954.6 million from a year ago. Take-Two also posted a net loss of $8.4 million for the period, compared to a gain of $108.8 million for the year prior.

Take-Two also updated its fourth-quarter and full fiscal year outlooks. The company said it now expects net income for the quarter ending March 31, 2012, to come in at $112 million to $162 million, down from $225 million to $275 million. And for the full fiscal year, Take-Two said it now expects to haul between $790 and $840 million, down from the $1 billion to $1.1 billion previously forecasted. This downturn was attributed to the delay of Max Payne 3.

THQ loses $56 million in holiday quarter: Thu, 02 Feb 2012 14:18:23 -0800

Darksiders II set for June, Devil's Third and Metro: Last Light hit early next year as publisher posts results that led to layoffs, killing of kids' games business.

It was a red Christmas for THQ, as the publisher today revealed heavy losses for the holiday quarter that led to its recent restructuring and layoffs.

For the three months ended December 31, 2011, THQ posted a net loss of $55.9 million, several times the $14.9 million loss it endured for the previous year's holiday season. The publisher's sales also took a dip, down about 3 percent year-over-year to $305.4 million.

"Sales of the uDraw GameTablet and related software, and other titles in the kids, family and casual category were far weaker than anticipated, substantially reducing our financial results for the quarter," THQ CEO Brian Farrell said in a statement accompanying the earnings. The publisher also updated investors on its extrication from the licensed kids' game business, saying it had finished negotiations to separate itself from two of its licensors, and is still working on agreements with two others.

Not everything from THQ's earnings was grim. The publisher heralded Saints Row: The Third as the most successful owned-IP launch in company history, with the Volition-developed action game shipping 3.8 million copies to date, with between 5 million and 6 million in shipments expected over its full lifetime. WWE 12 also performed well for THQ, with shipments of more than 2 million copies, and sell-through up 29 percent over the previous year's holiday WWE game (on a platform-by-platform basis).

Looking forward, THQ also laid out its release slate for coming fiscal years. After the Valentine's Day launch of UFC Undisputed 3, THQ's next big title will be Darksiders II, now expected to launch in June. After that, THQ expects Obsidian Entertainment's South Park Game and a new WWE game by the end of 2012, and Metro: Last Light and Devil's Third between January and March of 2013. THQ also has two unannounced games targeted at the core market for release by the end of March 2013.

Going even further out, THQ's fiscal 2014 (April 2013 - March 2014) includes Vigil and Relic's Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online, Volition and Guillermo del Toro's inSane, the Crytek-developed Homefront 2, THQ Montreal's original game from Patrice Desilets, and four more unannounced titles for core gamers. THQ didn't give clues about its unannounced titles other than to say the majority of them involve the company's own IP.

Rage: Campaign Edition now available on Mac: Thu, 02 Feb 2012 13:10:34 -0800

$40 single-player iteration of id Software's shooter now live for Apple computers, includes Anarchy Edition content and Wasteland Sewers missions.

Mac gamers can finally get their Rage on. Bethesda today announced that a single-player-only version of last year's shooter is now available to download for Apple computers.

The Rage: Campaign Edition includes the entire campaign from October's shooter, Anarchy Edition content (weapons, buggy, and armor), and the Wasteland Sewer missions, which were new purchase incentives for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game.

The game is available in English, French, and German through Apple's Mac App Store, publisher Aspyr's proprietary store Game Agent, and "other" Mac digital distribution outlets.

Rage is set on a postapocalyptic Earth in the midst of recovering from an asteroid collision, where humans have emerged from underground "arks" like the vaults in the Fallout games.

Players assume the role of a survivor who has emerged from an ark and subsequently been outfitted with an array of performance-enhancing nanotechnology and some powerful ranged weaponry.

Konami profits jump 77%: Thu, 02 Feb 2012 12:08:01 -0800

Japanese publisher reports $224 million net income during April-Dec. period as sales climb 3 percent to $2.55 billion; social gains offsetting console/handheld declines.

Konami's games business is having no problems raking in profits, but that success has more to do with its social gaming initiatives than anything going on in the console space. Today, the Japanese company issued its nine-month earnings report, revealing net income for the period was up 77.3 percent year-over-year to ¥17.05 billion ($224 million). Though not nearly as dramatic, sales also grew during the April-December period, rising 3 percent to ¥194.5 billion ($2.55 billion).

The company saw operating income up in a big way across nearly all of its segments during the reporting period. Digital entertainment, of which its games business is a part, nearly doubled its income contribution to ¥24.3 billion ($319 million) on sales of ¥99.5 billion ($1.31 billion).

However, these gains were largely attributable to its social networking services label, which houses its mobile and casual games. Revenues from this label rose from ¥9.7 billion ($127 million) during the first nine months of 2010 to ¥26.5 billion ($348 million) during the same period in 2011. Conversely, consumer games (aka console and handheld games) saw sales fall from ¥52.5 billion ($689 million) to ¥35.4 million ($465 million) over comparable periods.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 proved to be Konami's best-performing consumer title during the period, as its soccer business sold 5.43 million units from April-December. The Metal Gear franchise sold 1.21 million units during the period, followed by its baseball and music games at 1.16 million and 1.14 million units, respectively.

Beyond its traditional console and handheld gaming segment, Konami said that it was also experiencing a measure of success with its social games. The segment now has more than 15 million active players, with Dragon Collection and Sengoku Collection called out as top-performing titles.

On the back of its strong nine-month performance, Konami also said today that it has revised its full-year earnings projections upward. The publisher now expects revenues to reach ¥265 billion ($3.48 billion) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012. Net income expectations have been boosted to ¥22 billion ($289 million), which would signify a 70 percent rise over its previous fiscal year.

Call of Duty: Elite subscribers get first grab at new maps Piazza and Liberation at the end of the month; additional content to roll out through October.

Those with a paid subscription to Call of Duty: Elite can grab two new maps--Piazza and Liberation--on February 28. This is the same content that was made available to Xbox 360 gamers last month.

Activision did not mention when the maps will be made available to all PS3 Modern Warfare 3 players. However, the publisher said the first "content collection" will arrive sometime after its Xbox 360 debut in March.

Looking ahead, PS3 Call of Duty: Elite premium members can expect new Modern Warfare 3 content to arrive through October. For a full breakdown of what to expect, and when to expect it (relative to its initial launch for the Xbox 360), check out the Modern Warfare 3 content calendar.

The Call of Duty: Elite subscription service reached the 1-million-paid-users milestone within the first month of its November launch. Elite provides players with gameplay statistics, video sharing, and clan support features for free. Those who shell out for the $50 annual subscription will also receive all downloadable content released in the year, as well as exclusive video content and other perks

UFC Undisputed 3 gets Season Pass DLC: Thu, 02 Feb 2012 10:49:38 -0800

THQ details $17 bundle including 11 new fighters, 10 vintage UFC fights, and instant access to all unlockables; Season Pass free to those who preorder from publisher's online store.

UFC Undisputed 3 was already in store for a slew of add-ons thanks to an array of preorder bonuses announced last year, but today THQ detailed still more DLC for the upcoming fighter, along with a Season Pass subscription to get it all at a discount.

Available at launch for $17 (1,360 Microsoft points), the Season Pass will include access to 11 new fighters, 10 additional Ultimate Fights, and instant access to all of the game's unlockables. The unlockables and heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem will be available at the game's February 14 launch, while March and April will each see a pack of five new fighters and a pack of five new fights introduced.

When purchased separately, Overeem will cost $1 (80 Microsoft points), the unlockables will cost $2 (160 Microsoft points), and each of the fighter and Ultimate Fight packs will sell for $5 (400 Microsoft points). That makes the Season Pass a $6 savings over purchasing everything separately.

THQ also detailed some new DLC plans not covered by the Season Pass. The publisher will be offering a pair of Ultimate Fight packs at launch free of charge, as well as a Create-a-Fighter Boost Pack for $3 (240 Microsoft points). The boost pack bestows players additional points for their edited characters' attributes, which THQ has said can "save an estimated 8-10 hours of gameplay."

Those who want the Season Pass content but don't want to spend the extra money on it can get it for free by preordering UFC Undisputed 3 directly from THQ's online store. The publisher is also offering free shipping for the game.

Rayman 3 HD hits XBL, PSN March 21: Thu, 02 Feb 2012 07:37:05 -0800

Ubisoft's high-def downloadable revamp coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 next month; updated audio, 60fps visuals included.

Rayman Origins launched in November for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but Ubisoft isn't letting the series rest for long. Next month, gamers will have another Rayman game to play.

A tweet from Ubisoft reveals that Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc HD will launch on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network on March 21. Previously, the game was scheduled to arrive for those platforms sometime this spring.

Ubisoft did not mention a price for the game, and as of press time, the publisher had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc HD is a high-definition rerelease of Ubisoft's 2003 3D platformer. That game was released on the Xbox, GameCube, PlayStation 2, and PC, and it featured a more combat-centric approach than the series had previously adopted, as well as unlockable minigames.

For the HD rerelease, Ubisoft is updating the audio and tweaking the game to run at 60 frames per second, in addition to adding achievements/trophies and online leaderboards.

Disney acquires Ingition parent company UTV: Thu, 02 Feb 2012 06:20:00 -0800

Entertainment giant picks up India media house behind El Shaddai, Deadly Premonition via stock delisting.

Disney can now add El Shaddai and Deadly Premonition to its stable of franchises. Disney has announced it has acquired Ignition Entertainment parent company UTV Software Communications.

In August, reports suggested Disney was interested in buying out the India-based media company, which it already owned a majority stake in. UTV is the parent company of Ignition Entertainment, publisher of games like El Shaddai, Deadly Premonition, and Quarrel, which released last week on Xbox Live.

Disney will delist UTV's remaining shares from the stock market, enabling the company to fold UTV's business into its own. As part of the deal, Disney will also pick up UTV's Indiagames, which is one of the country's top mobile game companies.

UTV CEO Ronnie Screwvala has been named managing director of Disney India and will report to Andy Bird, Walt Disney International chairman.

"With the middle class expected to grow from 50 million to more than 500 million people by 2025, this market offers huge potential for us to deliver quality branded entertainment to consumers," he said.

It is unclear how this acquisition will affect Disney's gaming strategy moving forward. Disney's own gaming arm, Disney Interactive Studios, shut down Blackrock (developer behind Pure and Split Second) in July and Propaganda Games (Tron: Evolution) last year.
